Hi, Stig, your guide to Open Industrial Data (OID) here 👋In this article, I will introduce you to the reference data set of a industrial process system that the Open Industrial Data project contains. Analogous to what the Iris, Titanic, and gap-minder data sets are to learning data science tools, the OID project will be your entry ticket to working with industrial data. Here is a short technical description of the system on Valhall that is shared on the Open Industrial Data project. System descriptionThe data set represents the first of four stages of treatment of natural gas on the Valhall PH (Production Hotel) platform. The purpose of the gas train is to dry and compress the gas to meet the required export pressure and specification, with a total capacity of 4,06 [MSm3/d] (143 [MMscf/d]).The first stage compressor (23-KA-9101) is an electrically-driven, fixed-speed centrifugal compressor that receives gas from the separators at approximately 3 [barg] pressure. Before reaching the co

Hi, I’m Enikö Farkas from Cognite. With my team, we create e-learning for Cognite Academy. In our courses, we put a lot of emphasis on providing hands-on experiences so you can learn to use Cognite Data Fusion through interacting with real industrial data.In most of our courses, the training data we use comes from the Open Industrial Data (OID) project which is the result of a collaboration between Aker BP, one of Europe’s largest independent oil companies, and Cognite. While the data is from the oil and gas industry, its relevance is much broader: it gives us insight into dynamic industrial processes and can inspire all industries. In this article, I’m excited to share more about this project.About the dataThe data originates from a single compressor on Aker BP’s Valhall oil platform in the North Sea. Aker BP selected the first stage compressor on the Valhall because it is a subsystem with clearly defined boundaries, rich in time series and maintenance data.AkerBP uses Cognite Data Fus

Hi everyone,As we prepare for the General Availability release of Records in CDF on December 2nd, 2025, we're implementing important changes based on learnings from the Private Beta program.Timeline: These changes will be rolled out progressively between today and December 2nd, 2025. We'll update this post as specific changes go live. What's changing:Record-specific containers We are introducing a new type of container dedicated to records, which has higher limits for number of properties, and will allow evolution of the records specific container as more features are made available in records. This container is defined by the usedFor field set to "record". It will be possible to ingest records only into containers with usedFor set to "record" Any records already ingested into non-record containers will remain queryable, but new ingestion attempts to these containers will fail This separation enables better schema management, clearer data organization, and simpler logic for clients q

Hey everyone! 👋 I've been diving into the world of CDF data modeling for the past couple of weeks, and I thought I'd share what I've learned so far in a way that's easy to understand. First off, let's talk about the term "Data Modeling." It's everywhere in CDF - in API endpoints, UI, docs - but its meaning can vary depending on where you look. After some digging, I've figured out what it means specifically in CDF. Essentially, it's about organizing, storing, and working with data in a way that's perfect for handling complex industrial scenarios. Think of it as the foundation for unleashing the power of Cognite Data Fusion on your industrial data. So, what exactly makes up a Data Model in CDF? Let's break it down: Space: Think of it like a folder where everything in a Data Model hangs out. Containers, views, instances - they all belong to a Space and have their own unique ID. Containers: These are like the storage units for properties. They live within a space and hold sets of proper

A common setup that we have at Cognite is having 3 different environments: development, test and production. We have one specific Cognite Data Fusion (CDF) project for each of these environments. This setup allows to develop new features without interfering with production data. Also, it makes the deployment of new features to production much safer, since they are tested before.Sometimes, you still want to have the data you used during your tests, in your production environment. For example, if you extracted some data from sensors and saved them as time series in CDF, you may want to keep this historical data when you move to production. Same goes with files, assets, datasets, functions etc. Another example could be the replication of the data from a full production CDF project, to one of your customer’s project, containing only a subset of the source one.At Cognite, we have a python package (available at https://pypi.org/project/cognite-replicator/) whose purpose is to copy the select

Hey everyone ! Welcome back to our data modeling adventure in CDF! In my first post, I tried to explain my understanding of the core concepts - spaces, containers, views, and the elusive knowledge graph. We learned how data models act as the foundation for unlocking the power of Cognite Data Fusion for your industrial data. This time, let's delve deeper into the world of views and containers - the essential ingredients that bring your data models to life! Beyond the Fundamentals: Unveiling Views and ContainersThink of a data model as a recipe. It doesn't contain the actual ingredients (data) itself, but it tells you exactly what pre-made dishes (views) and fresh ingredients (containers) to use. Views: The Pre-Assembled Data: Imagine views as pre-prepared dishes – Views are essentially pre-defined data selections curated from specific containers. These containers hold the raw data (think sensor readings or equipment properties). A single view, akin to a pre-made sauce, can be referenced
