What is Open Industrial Data?

Hi, I’m Enikö Farkas from Cognite. With my team, we create e-learning for Cognite Academy. In our courses, we put a lot of emphasis on providing hands-on experiences so you can learn to use Cognite Data Fusion through interacting with real industrial data.

In most of our courses, the training data we use comes from the Open Industrial Data (OID) project which is the result of a collaboration between Aker BP, one of Europe’s largest independent oil companies, and Cognite. While the data is from the oil and gas industry, its relevance is much broader: it gives us insight into dynamic industrial processes and can inspire all industries.

In this article, I’m excited to share more about this project.

About the data

The data originates from a single compressor on Aker BP’s Valhall oil platform in the North Sea. Aker BP selected the first stage compressor on the Valhall because it is a subsystem with clearly defined boundaries, rich in time series and maintenance data.

AkerBP uses Cognite Data Fusion to organize the data stream from this compressor. The data set available in Cognite Data Fusion includes time series data, maintenance history, and Process & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) for Valhall’s first stage compressor and associated process equipment: first stage suction cooler, first stage suction scrubber, first stage compressor and first stage discharge coolers. The data is continuously available and free of charge

By sharing this live stream of industrial data freely, Aker BP and Cognite hope to accelerate innovation within data-heavy fields. This includes predictive maintenance, condition monitoring, and advanced visualization techniques, as well as other new, unexpected applications. Advancement in these areas will directly benefit Aker BP’s operations and will also improve the health and outlook of the industrial ecosystem on the Norwegian Continental Shelf.

Because no industrial player is an island. Each company exists as part of a larger ecosystem made up of suppliers, vendors, and other external stakeholders. The Open Industrial Data Project is about making a positive impact. Promoting an openness that benefits everyone in this ecosystem. The importance of this data transcends the oil and gas industry as it promotes openness, collaboration, and innovation - values that are crucial for success in each and every industry.

Our vision

Openness should be the new standard. Most of the industrial data should be open by default.

The Open Industrial Data project is a crucial first step toward a more open and collaborative industry. Where data sharing is the norm rather than the exception. Imagine the speed of technological advancement in a world where hundreds or thousands of industrial companies share live data this way. This project is about injecting real, live data into the realm of innovation and invention. Then stepping back to see what happens, to be surprised.

We are hoping the industry will join in and liberating data from their systems to facilitate more innovation on top of data from industrial space.

Hello everyone! I just watched the video about Open Industry Data and there is something I could not understand. At 02:45 it is mentioned that the data is live but there is an approximate one week delay. How could it be live with a delay?

Thanks in advance.

 

Edit: I just asked the same question to one of my colleagues and learned that “live” does not mean “real-time”. I was thinking they were the same, hence the question.
