We are right now looking at the first step of saving the user preference. If the user switches from list to category view, we will store that as a user preference and default to category view the next time she looks at files. Will let you know when this is ready!

We have now released functionality to preserve user preferences. We now store the user's selected view mode, and it defaults to that mode when they return to the category.
