New Users Default to Pre-Set Location Vs Specific Refinery

New users default to "preset location". This is fine except that it doesn't show you all of the information when you don't have a site chosen. The interface should force you to choose a site before displaying any info. The current setup can be extremely confusing for new users.

Hello @n989

Thank you for your input! I've assigned this to the product manager for Search, who will review the idea and follow up.

Hi @n989

Thank you for raising the challenge you experience. Your suggestion on presenting the user with an open location selector is great, and I will bring it back to the team for evaluation and testing.

In your experience,  is it clear for the user that they should choose “Your locations” and select from available locations there (vs. accepting “Preset location”)?

Thank you again for feedback.

Best,

Sofie, Product Manager

No, it’s not very intuitive. If you read the description, it reads as though you should select the “Preset Location” in order to see everything, but in reality that gives you extremely limited info/functionality. It would be great to remove the “preset Location” all together. I have confirmed this with my MPC team as well.

Also, since this was submitted, we’ve had many new users fall into this trap and not know why they weren’t getting the full functionality. It’s becoming a pretty big issue that could really hurt us on user adoption.

Hi again @n989!

We have evaluated some options. The first approach we’re testing is to automatically open the Location selector for users who haven’t yet made a selection, and have the “your locations” section expanded by default.

In other words, a “pop-up” prompting them to choose a location will be shown. As a potential next step, we will evaluate the proposal you had to not show the “preset location” option if custom locations are configured.

I’ll let you know when we are ready to test!

Best,

Sofie, product manager

Do we have a status update on this? We are having more and more users confused as to why they can’t see data and it all leads to this “preset location”. It keeps refreshing on folks and going back to “preset location” which is causing us to lose end users. The below graph is a perfect depiction of how this is an issue. Over  50 of our users have not switched over to site specific info which means they are not seeing the value of the tool.

Hi Nick, just to clarify, the plot you are displaying from Mixpanel is directly tied to the location-email list I got, this does not reflect the current location selection in CDF.

@Knut Vidvei / @Hunter Beck ,

Any input on when the “pop-up” feature will be ready to test? We are constantly losing MAU because the preset location is creating confusion within the users at MPC and we need to address this ASAP.

Hey @n989 could you expand on this please? We aren’t seeing this happen anywhere else.

Also note that the location selection is stored in the browser’s local storage. So when the user switches browser, clears local storage or if it was set while using incognito it will lead to the selection resetting.

Hi @n989 !

In the Q4 release happening Dec 2nd, we will have an update on the location selector, based on your feedback!

We are not able to fully remove the “preset” location (although renamed to “system default” with a better explanation), but we are ensuring that users who have not set their location filter will see a pop up with location selector in the beginning of each session.

See here a preview;

Sofie
