Search & Charts: Data Modeling time series appears in Default categories but does not work correctly

In Flows (Search and Charts), a Data Modeling time series shows up under the Default categories (Classic data model time series) by default. When selected in Search it appears with incomplete metadata (including an empty External ID) and cannot be added to a chart (“You can only add time series with external IDs to a chart”), even though the underlying time series does have an external ID.

The same time series can also be found under Other categories, where it works as expected: the External ID is shown and the time series can be plotted.

The confusing part is that users are presented with the non-working version by default, and there is no obvious indication that they should instead select the time series from another category. Since both entries appear to represent the same time series, I would consider this a UI bug or an inconsistency between how Classic and SDM time series are surfaced in Search & Charts.

Hi!
Due to how time series (and Files) are stored, they are accessible with the asset-centric/Classic APIs as well as Data modeling.

If you are in a hybrid project, and have not defined your locations, you can see both and we can not change this. In “default category” you will then see the base metadata of the Time series (and Files), and not any properties from the view schema.

We strongly advice to use locations if you are in a hybrid project set up, where the locations are not spanning asset-centric/classic and Data Modeling. If you have pure locations with either only asset-centric/classic or Data modeling, then you will not see default and other categories.

Is it possible to change the default location in a tenant? So that we could have classic as a secondary option in the interim before it’s retired.

Although this doesn’t allow you to change the default location in a project, it should solve the current pain points your end users are facing. Let me know if you have questions.

I am in a similar situation I believe. I need to see time series in Charts both from Classic, as well as from newer data models. Some time series were created months ago using classic, and newer results are being added to POEM DM, for example. I can find the time series in Search by selecting the rigth data model. But when I want to compare the time series and try tp add them to a common Chart, I cannot select all of them, only the ones from Classic.

Can you advice on how be able to add time series written to different DMs in the same chart?

Hi all, thanks for raising this. It looks like this comes down to how time series are stored.

Time series created in Data Modeling are expected to have an instance ID but no classic External ID. Time series that started out as classic and were later migrated are expected to keep their External ID. Charts needs an External ID to add a time series to a chart.

If your time series is in Data Modeling, you can find it under Other categories and add it to a chart from there.
