Inquiry About Extending Charts Axis Configuration for Operational Monitoring

We use Charts daily for real-time operational monitoring in oil refining operations, and it has become an essential tool for our engineers thanks to its automatic data updates and reliability.

We would like to ask whether it might be possible to extend Charts so that the X-axis can be configured using values other than timestamps. For example, plotting control valve opening on the X-axis and actual flow rate on the Y-axis would be very useful for our operations. We would appreciate it if users could freely choose what is used on the X-axis.

At the moment, since this is not supported in Charts, we rely on custom Streamlit applications built by Cognite engineers. In the future, we would like to place multiple such graphs on Canvas and monitor them on a single screen. From a usability perspective, implementing this capability directly in Charts—rather than through custom apps—would be much easier for users.

We would greatly appreciate your thoughts on whether this kind of enhancement could be considered in the future.

Thank you very much for your time and continued support.

I strongly agree with Ms.Kubota.
If Charts allowed values other than timestamps to be set on the X-axis, its usability would improve significantly.
In our case, we operate a chemical plant that produces products in batches, and we often want to compare historical batch process time series data with the current batch data side by side. For example, by comparing a reference batch (a “golden batch”) with the current batch, we can effectively detect catalyst or instrument degradation, as well as early signs of equipment issues.
If it were possible to configure an X-axis other than a timestamp—such as elapsed time since the start of batch production—we believe it would be possible to align and compare two batches directly on the same chart.
While Charts currently provides the “Shift time series” function, it requires both batches to be rendered within the same chart time range. For instance, when comparing with a batch from two years ago, at least two years’ worth of time series data must be displayed. This makes detailed comparisons difficult.
We would greatly appreciate it if you could consider implementing this functionality.

Hi @Kubota Mami

Many thanks for the detailed inquiry here.

At the moment, Charts only renders time series data, hence the need to have time on the x-axis. However, we are currently exploring visualizing discrete state data over time (state time series), by enabling our users to directly analyze discrete machine behaviors like 'Running' or 'Fault' alongside existing data.

This would be achieved through providing clear visual representations of state transitions and downtime, ultimately streamlining troubleshooting and root cause analysis.

Does this align with what you are referring to here? If so, we would love to hear your feedback as we explore further.
