Enable Tag Limit Attributes as Dynamic Thresholds in CDF Charts
Hi Cognite Community,
We have a requirement for CDF Charts to dynamically use configured tag limit attributes as chart thresholds, rather than requiring users to manually enter static threshold values on an ad-hoc basis.
For industrial tags/time series, we maintain multiple engineering and operational limits, for example:
- High / High-High limits
- Low / Low-Low limits
- Operating upper and lower limits
- Design limits
- Alarm limits
- Safe operating limits
- Other tag-specific engineering thresholds
currently supports configuring thresholds for time-series analysis and monitoring. However, we would like these thresholds to be dynamically sourced from the contextualized attributes associated with the tag/time series, rather than manually entering a value each time a chart is created.
Expected capability
For example, if a pressure tag has contextualized attributes such as:
- High: 80 bar
- High-High: 90 bar
- Low: 30 bar
- Low-Low: 20 bar
- Design Pressure: 100 bar
When the user adds that time series to a CDF Chart, they should be able to select:
Add Threshold → Use Tag Attribute → High-High
CDF Charts should then retrieve the applicable value, 90 bar, and dynamically display it as the threshold.
The same should work for any tag, without requiring the chart creator to know or manually enter its engineering limits.
Key requirements
- Allow CDF object/time-series attributes to be selected as chart thresholds.
- Support multiple limits on the same chart, such as HH, H, L and LL.
- Dynamically resolve the correct limit values for each selected tag.
- Retain the relationship to the source attribute, rather than copying the value as a static chart configuration.
- Automatically reflect changes when the governed limit value is updated at its source.
- Support limits coming from contextualized engineering data or custom data-model properties, not only time-series metadata.
- Allow these dynamic limits to be used for visualization, calculations, monitoring and alert conditions where applicable.
This is important for large-scale industrial deployment. CDF Charts provides capabilities for thresholds, monitoring and calculations, while CDF time series can carry metadata and relationships to data-model instances.
For thousands of tags, manually configuring static thresholds in individual charts creates a risk of incorrect, inconsistent or outdated limits.
Ideally, the engineering limit should be governed once as part of the contextualized tag information and reused dynamically across CDF Charts.
Does CDF Charts currently support binding chart thresholds to tag/data-model attributes? If not, is there a roadmap to support dynamic, attribute-driven thresholds?
