Question

Enable Layered Visualization of Transactional and Operational Data in CDF 3D

Hi Cognite Community,

We have a requirement to extend the CDF 3D experience beyond displaying attributes from the Core Data Model, so that users can visualize related transactional and operational information as configurable layers directly on the 3D model.

Our industrial knowledge graph connects equipment and functional locations to multiple types of information, for example:

  • SAP Notifications and Work Orders
  • Maintenance Plans
  • Inspection findings
  • Reliability events / Bad Actors
  • RCA and TFN records
  • MOC records
  • Alarms and operational events
  • Engineering and operational documents
  • Time-series conditions and calculated KPIs

The Cognite Core Data Model provides standardized industrial concepts and can be extended through additional models and relationships. [docs.cognite.com], [docs.cognite.com]

However, we would like the 3D visualization to make greater use of these contextual relationships, rather than limiting the user experience primarily to the attributes directly associated with the core 3D/asset objects.

Expected capability

We would like users to be able to enable configurable layers such as:

3D Plant → Equipment → Transactional / Operational Layers

For example:

  • Maintenance layer: equipment with open notifications/work orders
  • Reliability layer: bad actors, active RCA/TFN cases
  • Inspection layer: equipment with overdue inspections or findings
  • MOC layer: assets affected by active plant modifications
  • Alarm layer: equipment with active/significant alarms
  • Document layer: equipment with associated engineering/operational documents
  • Condition layer: equipment based on real-time or calculated condition/KPI

The 3D visualization should allow users to filter, highlight, color-code and interact with equipment based on these related transactional objects and their attributes, even when those attributes are not directly part of the Core Data Model object representing the 3D asset.

For example:

Highlight all compressors with an open high-priority SAP notification and allow the user to select the equipment in 3D and view the related notification/work-order information.

This would turn 3D from primarily an asset visualization capability into a contextual operational view of the plant.

Questions

  1. Does CDF currently support configurable 3D layers based on related/custom data-model objects, rather than only attributes directly available on the core objects?
  2. Can relationships in the CDF knowledge graph be traversed to dynamically determine the visualization or highlighting of 3D equipment?
  3. Can multiple business layers such as Maintenance, Reliability, Inspection, MOC and Alarms be independently switched on/off?
  4. Can visualization rules, including color, status, filtering and highlighting, be configured based on attributes of related transactional objects?
  5. Can selecting highlighted equipment in 3D expose the related transactional records and their key properties?
  6. If this is not currently supported, is there a roadmap to provide a more knowledge-graph-driven 3D visualization capability?

This would be particularly valuable for large industrial implementations where the real value of 3D comes not only from viewing the physical asset, but from bringing the current operational, maintenance, reliability and engineering context onto the plant visualization itself.
