We need the ability to search documents like P&IDs in CDF or the canvas to find annotations, some documents have 50+ annotations and without a search feature, we have to manually look through the entire document to find the asset tag we are looking for.

Hi @RyanGuillory and thank you for taking the time to submit this product idea.

I’ve notified the Product Manager responsible for Search and Data Exploration, and expect them to either reach out directly, or connect with you through this thread should they have any questions or any further follow-up

Hi @RyanGuillory
Thank you for the feature request! I agree, this is something we want to support in Search and it is now added to our backlog. I will update you when I have an estimated timeline.

This is something we at Aker BP are also interested in having as part of our process for verifying the automated annotations.

Great to hear there is other customers who are also interested in this capability.

Hi @RyanGuillory, @bmcclure and @Markus Pettersen

I re-read the request and wanted to double-check my understanding.

  1. Ability to search across all annotations of a File
  2. Ability to perform text search in a File.

For (1), we have recently updated the Annotation side panel; a) search box, b) filter option, c) you can select columns, d) from clicking on an Annotation in side panel, you will be zoomed in to that annotation in the File. Is this what you were looking for?

For (2), we are targeting to have in-file search, but that would not be for the Annotations, but rather detected text in the file.

Best,

Sofie, Product Manager

Hi Sofie, sorry for delay, Does the capability of #1 also work in the canvas?

Hi @RyanGuillory !

Yes, it works from the “Add data” side panel in Industrial Canvas.
If you have a document in Canvas, click on it and select “Find related data” to open it in the side panel. From here, in Preview mode, you will see annotations, and you can search across them (you will have to adjust the width of the side panel for the best experience—we still have some work to do on responsiveness when the side panel is narrower).

Sofie

Hi Sofie, the “zoom to annotation in the file” isn’t working in my environment.

@RyanGuillory

I was unfortunately mixing a bit. We are planning to enable zoom into the annotation, while it is currently not built in. When clicking on an annotation, the annotated area of the file is colored today.

Sofie

Just to clarify, the difficulty is in finding particular annotations on busy diagrams like the one below.  So, zooming to the annotation would help, or even just a cntrl F option, but saying the annotated area is colored definitely doesn’t help the issue we’re having.

Hi @RyanGuillory, @bmcclurem  @Markus Pettersen and @Øystein Aspøy

I'm happy to share some great news! We've just shipped a product update that hopefully makes working with Annotations more fluid and intuitive.

We heard your feedback that it was sometimes hard to pinpoint which annotation you were working with, especially on a busy file. To solve this, we've made two key improvements:

  • See what you've selected: When you click on an annotation—either in the side panel or on the file itself—it will now turn green so you can easily see what you've selected.

  • Instantly zoom in: Clicking an annotation in the side panel will automatically zoom in to its location in your file.

Here is a screen recording showing the new behaviour:

Give them a try and let us know what you think!

Best,

Sofie, Product Manager

Hi @Sofie Svartdal Berge

I had a quick look at the new feature, so far it works well and is a feature we have been missing for a while. This is a great addition.

Is there any plans to add the same functionality to “Data explorer” in “Data management” as well, or is this only intended for “Search” in “Industrial tools”?

Unfortunately, we do not plan to bring this into Data Explorer. Search is taking over from Data Explorer, so all effort on new functionality goes into Search (which is the tool that also supports Data Modeling, not only asset-centric).

@John Cassidy / @Markus Pettersen

Is there a plan to integrate this into Canvas as well?

It is already supported in the “add data” section in Canvas (and Charts) - if you have, e.g., a P&ID in Canvas, you can open it in search to look through the list of all annotations. Is this what you are looking for?
I’ll tag the Product Manager @Andreea Oprea for Canvas for additional requests.

Best,

Sofie
