Question

Valhall 3D Model Compatibility for Web-Based Industrial Visualization

Hello Cognite Community,

I'm exploring a web-based industrial visualization project focused on the Valhall facility, using React Three Fiber and Three.js to build an interactive 3D experience.

I'm looking into the available 3D asset formats and the best approach for integrating industrial facility models into a browser-based rendering pipeline.

For those who have worked with Valhall or similar industrial 3D assets:

  • Which model formats or export workflows are suitable for integrating these assets with Three.js?

  • Are there any publicly accessible Valhall model datasets or approved demonstration assets available for development and testing?

  • If the source model is provided in CLV or another specialized format, what is the recommended workflow for making it compatible with a web-based 3D viewer?

I'd appreciate any technical documentation or recommendations regarding the model pipeline.

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

  • Is this question related to using 3D models from CDF? CDF serves 3D models in our internal format, making it hard to use for other consumers than our Reveal viewer. However, if your plan is to use the source files directly, there are loaders for many different format made for ThreeJS. FBX is one such choice which may fit your use case.
  • There used to be an open model of Valhall, but I believe it is no longer available to the public, unfortunately
  • To use any format in Cognite’s Reveal 3D viewer which we don’t directly support, you will need to first convert it to a supported format, which are listed here: https://docs.cognite.com/cdf/3d/guides/3dmodels_intro#supported-3d-file-formats . If the question is about 3D in a custom ThreeJS viewer, you will have to convert it to a format for which there is a corresponding loader in ThreeJS.

The answers I’m giving here are very tailored towards usage with CDF. If you are not using CDF for the 3D data, you may have to look for answers on other forums

Thanks for the detailed explanation! This is very helpful.

My goal is to build a standalone industrial 3D viewer using React Three Fiber and Three.js, rather than relying on Cognite Reveal for rendering.

I understand that the original Valhall model may no longer be publicly available. Would you recommend any publicly accessible industrial plant or process facility models that I could use for development and demonstration?

Also, if a model is available only in a specialised format, is there a recommended way to obtain the source geometry or export it to GLB/GLTF for a custom Three.js viewer?

I appreciate your guidance!
