Telemetry & Usage Insights: User Activity, API Metering, and App Usage

Forum|alt.badge.img+1

Hi,

I would like to check whether there is any CDF Admin UI or available APIs that provide the telemetry and usage-related insights such:

  1. User activity logs such logins, user actions, dataset access, frequency of use

  2. API usage metering such calls made by service accounts or integrations, volume over time

  3. Application usage tracking such as which integrations/apps are active, which endpoints are being used and etc.

  4. Quota and resource usage tracking, like number of API calls, storage/compute loads.

Are there any CDF admin dashboards, telemetry APIs, or audit logs available for this purpose?

Please advise.  Thanks

Hi,

Cognite has data that measure user activity, number of API calls, number of objects of each resource type.  This is metrics that originally was collected to manage the capacity planning and scaling of the services to ensure we meet the load at any given time.  The data is collected using our monitoring infrastructure and the data is currently found in data stores that are poorly suited for sharing with customers.   The challenge is mainly on tenant isolation and lack of a well defined API for serving data to users.

Cognite recognize the need for customers to understand their own usage, and we are working with several customers to determine what data is useful.  These discussions may not be mature enough to share the outcome yet. As far as I can see from the roadmap updates here in HUB, we have not committed to providing usage metrics, yet.   It would still be interesting to learn about your use case in order to put this on the agenda for later releases.

The raw data we have internally is stored in time series showing the daily count of users, apps, API-names, resource type objects and API-call counts.  To convert metrics to useful data there is need for organizing the data, document how they are measured, and to develop an API to retrieve trends, max, min, delta and averages. Further, we will have to support aggregation of data in ways that are meaningful to customers.

I would appreciate if you could provide input on your use case to help build a better understanding of what data we should collect and prepare for exposure to users.
