SUMMARY

Servi Group used Industrial DataOps software provided by Cognite, including Cognite Data Fusion, to build Servi Monitor, a software application that enables smart monitoring of machines.

Servi Monitor is estimated to reduce downtime by 30-50%, maintenance costs by 10-40%, and energy use and emissions by 10-20%.

CHALLENGE
Shift from calendar-based to condition-based maintenance

In the manufacturing industry, machine data such as temperature changes, air pressure, and oil quality is often collected manually by technicians when they inspect the machines. These inspections are often calendar-based, an approach that can have its downsides:

  • Machines can operate under suboptimal conditions until the next scheduled round of maintenance.
  • Technicians spend time inspecting machines in good working order, since their work is based on a calendar, not the actual condition of machines.
  • Machines can break down between scheduled inspections, as technicians lack a good way of monitoring their condition of the machines in real time.

Servi Group, Norway’s largest supplier of hydraulic equipment, wanted to combine smart sensors, cloud technology, and its domain expertise accumulated over more than 100 years, into a product that streamlines machine monitoring. Such a product would help manufacturers avoid downtime, optimize maintenance work, and cut energy consumption.

To develop the product, Servi needed a data platform that extracts large quantities of industrial data, makes connections between previously disparate data sources, and presents the information to users for decision-making.

SOLUTION
Servi Monitor, powered by Cognite Data Fusion

Servi used the Industrial DataOps platform Cognite Data Fusion to build Servi Monitor, a software application that enables smart monitoring of machines. With Servi Monitor, users can:

Access real-time and historical machine data to view trends and monitor performance.
Monitor the condition of machines and receive alerts by email or text message if a value exceeds a predefined threshold.
Automatically generate reports and receive tailored recommendations to improve performance.
In addition to machine data, Servi Monitor can also connect to external data sources such as electricity prices, weather forecasts, traffic, documents, or nonphysical measurements.

One example is energy use. Servi Monitor can calculate energy consumption per equipment for a given period of time and generate recommendations for how to optimize energy use without negatively affecting production.

Cognite Data Fusion serves as the data foundation for Servi Monitor. The Industrial DataOps platform provides instant access to trustworthy and contextualized data, making it easy for Servi to develop, operationalize, and scale Servi Monitor.

IMPACT

Servi Monitor is estimated to reduce downtime by 30-50%, maintenance costs by 10-40%, and energy use and emissions by 10-20%.

By digitalizing and automating repetitive, time-consuming tasks, Servi Monitor enables equipment manufacturers and asset owners to optimize production and cut waste. With a full, real-time overview of the performance of all their machines, asset owners can shift to a more efficient approach to maintenance based on equipment condition.

“With real-time monitoring and our cutting-edge expertise in hydraulics, electrical systems, and automation, you can bring your machine fleet into Industry 4.0--and be fully equipped for a digital future.”
Morten Brøvig Thomassen, CTO, Servi Group

How I can access those trustworthy and contextualized data ?

Hi @pratish dewangan! Thanks for your interest, would love to hear more about your use case. We have many ways to support accessing contextual data from Software Development Kits (SDKs), 3rd party tools (e.g., Grafana), Cognite Industry Tools (e.g., Cognite Charts), and more.

Thanks a lot for sharing. Is CBM functionality becoming a part of the Cognite Maintain application?

@Joanna Wiedmann thanks a lot for your question. My name is Mina William and I am the Product Manager for Maintain.

Maintain does not support CBM functionality. Maintain is an application that will help our users to Prioritize their backlogs, Create and Optimize plans, and finally assisting in Work Prep and Execution. What we see, is that CBM programs will lead to the initiation of a workorder with high importance/criticality that will be then ingested in Maintain. The planner would then prioritize that said workorder for his/her current plan.

Having said that, we have ways to support Condition-Based Maintenance (CBM) strategies with Cognites' portfolio today, such as setting up monitoring and alerting with Cognite Charts. As CBM is a big topic it would be great if you could detail out a bit what you mean by "CBM functionality".

Cheers,

Mina
